“I’m a reasonable person.” She shrugged, continuing her pattern tracing across the tabletop, a series of names, letters, and numbers, written as if she could see them clearly in her head. It had become a habit, really. “No, he hasn’t, and I wouldn’t expect him to do so.” She continued, wrinkling her nose slightly and marking out something with an invisible x, finger continuing to trace. “And I’ve no desire to continue in this particular topic either because it will lead to a very volatile discussion that I’m not willing to have.”

Obviously,” he drawled. He would have to motion the bar keep soon, since his drink was empty now, but he put off the action. “I wasn’t either.” Severus doubted it would be much longer before King visited with a stack of documents for him to dig through. They could discuss the doctor then. “I’m not a man particular to speaking of the personal. Relationships clearly fall into that category.” He watched her fingers trace along the table top for a time before deciding on another topic. “So, you managed to brew the wolfsbane. I take it the serum was no longer viable, nor necessary to help the boy.”

“Both. I’ll let the decision be up to him which he would rather have.” Helen responded quietly, staring at her drink again. She frowned at it a moment, thinking.   “After all, it is his ability. I’m only here to help.” She added. “And I don’t see why it should matter if he’s more human or fae - again, it’s his choice in the end, not mine.” Helen continued, furrowing her brow at his next statement. “Yes, as I’m well aware but in some instances love is the most powerful magic - more powerful than anything you could cast.” Helen stated quietly, looking away again. “However, it’s also a fairytale. It doesn’t exist as often as people like to think. Or it’s ruined by things out of our control.” She shook her head again, a sick feeling pooling in her stomach. She wasn’t in the mood to even go there, ignoring his last comment.

“That sounds more reasonable.” He looked into his now empty glass and tilted it from side to side for a moment.  “It’s was simply something that might be a concern. It’s not as if he’s turned his back on his heritage after all.” When she mentioned love once more his lips turned down and a sneer crossed his face. It wasn’t as if he needed another person to lecture him on the power of love. Severus looked up as her words turned away positive, lauded thing into something a bit darker. “It’s best to change the topic. I’ve no desire to continue in this vein.”

“Yes, I am.” Helen replied evenly, meeting his gaze. “I’m going to perform a series of blood tests that will tell me which bit is controlling the glamour and then I’m going to devise a serum that will render it inert, getting rid of the ability completely.” She explained, taking another drink and ignoring the grimace on his face. She didn’t want to know. “I say let them be. They’re in love.” Helen said quietly, nodding. “And yes, I know, but I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

The glass in front of him was lifted as he took another sip. It looked like only a few more sips remained before he would have to get another. “You said control, elimination is a different thing entirely. What exactly did you tell him?” Out of the two of them he knew that she had far more experience with magical creatures, but King keep his secrets close and all the times he’s disappeared… He drew in a breath and let out an exasperated sigh. “If you did succeed I have to wonder if he’d be considered more man than fae then.” An eyebrow arched for a moment as he looked at her.  “She doesn’t know any better due to youth and he has a blind spot for those close to him. A bad combination all around.” His hand wrapped around the glass as she continued to speak. “In my experience love only gets people killed,” he murmured bitterly and under his breath before tipping his head back and downing the rest of the alcohol. “Going on a crusade so soon?”

“The most he seems to want right now is a way to control that ability, and I’ve offered it to him, if I can get it to work the proper way.” Helen replied, studying him another moment. “If anything to help him so in that a few years he and his girlfriend don’t have to hide away from the rest of the world forever.” She shook her head. “Then I would suggest keeping it that way. His ability is only going to increase within the next few years and quite frankly it’ll be difficult for anyone to be around him.”

“Are you capable of offering him such control, Dr. Magnus?” Severus looked down into his drink a brief moment before returning his gaze back to her. “We have been trying to develop a way to stifle the effects for years and have only found a potion to help after prolonged exposure, nothing to rein it in.” A grimace crossed his face at the mention of a ‘girlfriend’. He still believed the pair of them had no idea what they were doing, and Miss Anders was still a student. “I’m trying to ignore that situation, at least for the moment with them separated by distance and time. As for the ability… we’ve already determined that would be the case once his glamour reached full maturity.”

Helen traced an invisible pattern along the tabletop, shrugging. “Oh, I experienced his flirting and flattery, but he was civil about it. The way you spoke of him I assumed him to be some spoiled brat who used his abilities to get any girl he possibly could just to prove that he could. He’s quite the opposite of what I first assumed - quite the gentleman.” Helen mused, chuckling. “Perhaps you ought to get him a keeper to do that for you.”

He shrugged. “I’ve known him since school. He is civil, but has a way of getting what he wants that’s almost uncanny. Warning about the behavior is something I’ve grown used to, but I never mentioned his personality. ” He brushed a stray hair from his eyes as he listened to her suggestion. “I am the closest thing he has for a keeper. The visits to Hogwarts usually occur after curfew or in the early morning.” It had been a fairly effective system up to a point.  “I tend to use silencing spells at conferences,” he said with a smirk on his face.

“As I said, I haven’t blown up any solutions in years.” Only her house, she added to herself silently. That had certainly been fun. Helen chuckled softly. “Of course. I told you he’d not effect me. I didn’t turn into a staring, falling down, giggling young school girl in his presence like apparently some young women do.”

“I seem to recall you mentioning something along those lines.” He picked the cup up once more and took another drink. “Perhaps his glamour, but the man tends to be a relentless flirt when he thinks there’s even a remote attraction. As for the school girls… try keeping him in line along with a handful of teenage girls on the occasions he comes to visit the school. Although I don’t have much to worry of until we room in suites anywhere near a university for a potions conference.”

“Ah.” She said, frowning slightly as she sipped on her own drink, stirring it lightly with the straw sticking out of the top of it. She swirled it thoughtfully, looking back up at him. “The wolfsbane is working, as I predicted it would. In the manner I predicted it would.” Helen replied, albiet almost smugly. “But I did get to meet with your friend Mr. King while I’ve been in London.”

Severus lifted his drink up to her as she said she was successful. It was one of the more difficult potions he knew to brew. “Congratulations at avoiding another explosion.” He took another sip of the liquid before placing it back on the table. Arching an eyebrow at her comment about meeting King. “I see you still have your wits about you.”

Flipping through photos in an effort to possibly clear out some of the data on her phone, she smiled faintly when she reached the ones of Ashley still there. She didn’t have the heart to delete them, even when she had already moved them to her computer. She was feeling sentimental - Mother’s Day was coming up and while she had Henry to celebrate it with, Helen missed her little girl. She shuffled past the rest of the photos quickly and took another drink, shaking her head. Now was not the time.

She looked up, offering Snape a smile when he sat down across from her. “Professor.” Helen greeted, tucking her phone back away. “I hope you’ve been well.”

“There’s been no significant change from our last meeting.” He picked up the drink he had placed on the table and took a sip from it. The whiskey wasn’t as strong as Ogden’s Old but it had a nice burn as the liquid traveled down his throat. “Was there a particular reason you called this meeting. Anything questions involving the wolfsbane?” She probably would be looking a bit more ragged if her experimentation had failed.
